Widening participation

The School of European Languages, Culture and Society is committed to fair access and widening participation. At present, we support these objectives in two principal ways at present.

Summer Schools

We run an annual Summer School in June that gives students of A level (and equivalent qualifications) languages the opportunity to attend masterclasses that work on their advanced linguistic skills, as well as giving them a flavour of the teaching of literature, film and culture at university level. We offer information about careers for Modern Foreign Language students and tips about getting in to the University of your choice, including the dos and don’ts of the personal statement.

If you or students from your school would like to register an interest in attending the 2013 Summer School, then please contact Dr Kevin Inston. Similarly, our staff are always delighted to come in visit to schools and speak to year 12 and 13 students, so please do not hesitate to get in touch if there is a particular topic that you would like us to come and speak about.

Small Fry Workshops

We also offer introductory workshops to both less and more- widely taught languages, aimed at year 8 and 9 students. These are available for Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Romanian and Spanish. They do not presuppose any prior knowledge and are designed to be fun, interactive and inspiring. We like to think that they will encourage students to think about taking languages at GCSE and beyond.

If you would like a Small Fry workshop to be held at your School then please get in touch. They can also be adapted for more advanced students with an interest in a particular lesser taught language, e.g. Dutch or Italian.
