Language and Culture

Language and Culture BA (UCAS code R991) - this is the School's most flexible degree programme as students have the opportunity to study up to three languages throughout their time at UCL as well as examine the place of language within European culture due to the compulsory culture element of the degree programme.

Students can choose two languages (one as a major language, the other as their minor language) from the following wide range of languages taught across UCL:

  • Ancient Greek*
  • Arabic (this may only be studied as a minor language)
  • Dutch
  • French*
  • German
  • Hebrew
  • Italian
  • Latin*
  • Norwegian
  • Russian
  • Spanish*
  • Swedish
  • Yiddish
  • A Central of Eastern European language (Bulgarian, Czech, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Serbian/Croatian, Slovak, Ukranian) subject to availability.

* A prior qualification at A level or equivalent is required for these languages if chosen as a 'major' language.

In the second year of the Language & Culture BA degree programme students have the opportunity to switch their major and minor language, subject to availability, or to keep their main language and pick a different second language.

Please note that Language and Culture BA students go to a country where their major language is spoken during their third year.

Modern Languages

Modern Languages BA (UCAS code R000) - this degree programme enables students to study two languages (either two languages you have already studied, or one language at beginner's level alongside one you already know) with equal weighting throughout their time at UCL. In their third year students studying Modern Languages spend their third year abroad split between two countries affiliated with the languages that they are studying. Please note that the entry requirements for the Modern Languages BA combinations differ and are available to view here.

Any two of the following languages may be combined:

  • Dutch
  • French*
  • German
  • Hebrew
  • Italian
  • Russian
  • Scandinavian (You may only study ONE of Danish, Norwegian or Swedish; Icelandic may be combined with another Scandinavian language subject to approval)
  • Spanish*
  • Eastern European (one of: Bulgarian, Czech, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Serbian/Croatian, Slovak, Ukrainian)
  • Yiddish

* languages are not taught from beginner's level so prior qualification at A level or equivalent is required.
