ITAL1105 - Background to Dante and Inferno
Value: 0.5 course units
Tutor: Professor John Took
Teaching structure: Introductory lectures in the first half of the first term on Dante’s life and times will be followed by readings from the text itself.
Assessment: one unseen two-hour written examination (100%).
Students will be required to study the whole canticle, though passages for commentary in the examination will be drawn from the following cantos: 1, 4, 5, 10, 13, 15, 19, 26, 27, 33 and 34. Particular attention will be paid to basic comprehension, leading ideas, style and overall structure in the canticle. This module is essential preparation for second- and final-year options on Dante.
Preparatory Reading and Set Texts:
These will be circulated at the first lecture.
