DUTCG004 - Literature of the Dutch Golden Age: Advanced Reading

Value: 30 credits
Tutor: Professor Theo Hermans
Teaching structure:
two 3,000 word coursework essays (70%); and one oral presentation (30%).

Module Description:

The module is intended for students who possess a sound knowledge of modern Dutch, have experience of reading seventeenth-century Dutch and are familiar with the main literary works and genres of the period and their historical and intellectual context. The module allows students to extend and deepen that knowledge through guided reading of primary and secondary texts. The primary texts are read exclusively in Dutch and cover prose, drama and poetry of the entire seventeenth and the latter half of the sixteenth century. They are selected so as to build on the individual student’s past work and explore new authors, genres and themes. Extensive use is made of secondary literature in both Dutch and English.
