Founded in 1828, the Department of German at UCL is the oldest in the UK. In recent decades, it has become an interdisciplinary centre of excellence, offering in-depth study of German thought, literature, history, politics, theory and film. The department's research standing is extremely high and it boasts one of the largest groups of graduate students in the country. Housed within the School of European Languages, Culture & Society, we are repeatedly voted the best German Department in the country and achieve the highest rating on both teaching and research in government assessments of universities.
