Post-Colonialism and Europe
Course code: ELCS6059
Tutor: Dr J Mitchinson
Level: Intermediate
Mode of Assessment: 2 assessed essays of 2000 words each
Term: taught in term 1
Course Description:
This course provides an introduction to the critical theory of post-colonialism, testing the theory against a range of European contexts. In particular, the notion of post-colonialism is problematised by considering both colonies of Europe in different historical periods and by considering a number of territories within Europe as ‘colonised’ rather than ‘coloniser’. In the first six weeks of the course, each weekly seminar focuses on close reading of key critical-theoretical texts. Weeks Seven and Eight focus the practical application of post-colonial theory to literature and to other fields. Weeks Nine and Ten focus on the issue of ‘colonies’ within Europe, and the concept of ‘internal colonialism’.
