UCL SECReT Industry Evening 2009

Report and student presentations

The first industry evening of the Security Science Doctoral Research Training Centre took place at UCL in December 2009. Our first cohort of 11 doctoral students presented to an audience of 70 from a broad spectrum of industry, public- sector and academic organisations , including representatives from the Home Office, Forensic Science Service, Cranfield University, National Nuclear Labs, NPIA, Smiths Detection, BAE Systems, British Petroleum, Met Police, Royal Bank of Scotland and the Serious Organised Crime Agency.

Students, working in teams, presented four crime and security scenarios and by way of these scenarios introduced themselves and their individual research interests – see below. After the presentations students networked with the attendees and practised the valuable (and often intimidating!) skill of ‘selling’ their research interest to individuals from the ‘real world’. Most of the students were able to do this successfully and received generous offers of project support from various agencies and organisations ranging from police forces and airport authorities through to industry organisations such as G4S and BAE systems.

Scenario 1: 'Securing a major event' by Toby and Lusine

Scenario 2: 'Financial Crime: understanding, prevention and intervention' by Elena, Theo and Inka

Scenario 3: 'Airport border control Airport' by Ella, Ireneos and James

Scenario 4: 'Applying multidisciplinary approaches to a crime scene' by Hester, Helen and Tim
