PhD Symposium of Scandinavian Studies in the UK
Call for Papers
9-10 September 2010
Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Collaborative Research Training Scheme - Student Led Initiative
Hosted by the Department of Scandinavian Studies, University College London
What is Scandinavian Studies?
Scandinavian Studies is a broad subject area that includes the study of any aspect of the languages, cultures and/or histories of the Nordic countries. At present UK Scandinavian Studies departments offer courses in Old Norse, modern languages (Danish, Icelandic, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish), linguistics, translation, place-name studies, literature (from the Viking age to the present), cinema, history, landscape studies, folklore and mythology. This Call for Papers is addressed to all PhD students registered at UK institutions that are working in ANY of the above-mentioned fields or in ANY OTHER Scandinavian-related field.
The aim of the Symposium
- To define or re-define the broad research area referred to as Scandinavian Studies.
- To lay the foundations for the development of a comprehensive network and of a sense of community among PhD students in Scandinavian Studies registered at UK universities.
- To raise the awareness of the extent and significance of Scandinavian Studies within the UK research environment and attract the attention of the wider public towards various aspects of this field.
- To establish a network of contacts within the Scandinavian Studies PhD community and encourage teamwork and future cooperative projects.
- To discuss together the set-up of the Nordic Research Network blog as the basis of a virtual community and a forum of interdisciplinary discussions.
Abstract Submission:
The organisers of the symposium welcome abstracts from PhD students in ALL fields of Scandinavian Studies. Comparative projects with clear connections to Scandinavian related topics will also be considered.
Abstract submission is open to:
· any PhD student currently carrying out research in a UK institution
· any prospective PhD student who is due to start a PhD programme at a UK institution by the end of September 2010
· any PhD student who has submitted the thesis at or has been awarded a PhD by a UK institution between September 2009 and September 2010.
Abstracts should be no more than 200 words and should be sent either within the corpus of an e-mail or as attachment to the following address: nrn2010@googlemail.com Abstracts should clearly state the name, institution and contact details of the author(s), the title (final or provisional) of the PhD thesis, and the topic of the PhD research project. Students can choose between giving an oral presentation or a poster presentation. Students choosing the oral presentation option should specify whether they will require the use of PowerPoint. All individual presentations will be allocated about 20 minutes.
The deadline for abstract submission is 30 April 2010.
The organising committee will review all abstracts and acceptance will be notified via e-mail by 15 May 2010. A provisional programme of the two-day symposium will be available by 30 May 2010.
Travelling and accommodation:
PhD students are asked when possible to apply for funding from their own institutions. A limited amount of funding is available for a contribution towards travelling or accommodation expenses. Students who are unable to obtain any funding from their home institution should notify this when sending their abstract proposal stating why they would not qualify for funding from their home institution, where they will be travelling from, and how much they estimate their travelling expenses to amount to. Please note that decisions on funding for travelling and accommodation expenses will be made on a case by case basis. The organisers’ decision is final.
