        New Themes launched

        The Environment Research Domain has launched Themes, showcasing the work of researchers at UCL. This is one mechanism by which people in different Schools, Faculties and Departments can get to know of one another's work and interests. We hope that Themes - the first of which is Climate Change - can help Domain members create opportunities for partnering on research proposals and publications, or even for developing new perspectives on the impact of research.

        Royal Society Newton Fund Mobility Grants

        Deadline: 15th March 2017

        The Royal Society offers Newton International Exchanges as mobility grants to provide international researchers (from Malaysia, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand or Turkey) with funding towards travel, subsistence and research expenses for either a one-off short visit to explore opportunities for building lasting networks or for bilateral visits to strengthen emerging collaborations.

        The skills and knowledge gained should lead to changes in the wellbeing of communities and increased economic benefits.

        This award is currently available to international researchers that want to strengthen the research and innovation capacity by visiting or sending staff and students to the UK. The aims are to:

        • Strengthen research capacity of the partner countries - by facilitating training and skill transfer from the UK to partner countries.
        • Support excellent research - by linking the best researchers in the UK with the best researchers and their groups in partner countries and providing support for initial exploratory research.
        • Establish long term research links - between both partners to ensure sustainable research capacity in partner countries and benefit to the UK research community in the longer term.

        The funding available is dependent upon the length of the visit and the partner country.  Applicants may request:

        • up to £3,000 for one-off travel lasting up to 3 months
        • up to £6,000 for multiple visits to be completed within 1 year (including a maximum of £1,000 for research expenses)
        • up to £12,000 for multiple visits to be completed within 2 years (including a maximum of £2,000 for research expenses)

        Green UCL Competition: Re-Imagining a Sustainable Campus

        Deadline: 15th March

        Green UCL are asking you to illustrate your vision of a sustainable University. The chosen images will reflect UCL's Sustainability Aims and Objectives which are:

        • To create a campus which supports UCL's academic, research and enterprise activities in a sustainable way
        • To enable, empower and support all UCL communities to address our environmental sustainability impacts
        • To provide the education, advancement, dissemination and application of sustainable development
        • To maximise the wider impact of UCLs environmental sustainability activities at local, regional, national and international level through collaboration, partnership and communications

        You are encouraged to think creatively about how UCL could look in the future as sustainability continues to be a top priority for the institution. The competition challenges you to address the relationship between UCL and the city (with its limited space, historical buildings and pollution) and to think about how the institution might manage its local and global impacts as well as build on its world class academic reputation

        All students, undergraduates and postgraduates at UCL can enter. Bartlett and Engineering students are encouraged to participate. The winning images/illustrations will be used in UCL's Sustainability Annual Report 2015-2016.

        UCL CSSD Early Career Researchers Network event: Tricks of the trade: ideas for generating interdisciplinary research

        Date: 24 March 10-12pm

        Convened and presented by Sir Alan Wilson, Chief Executive, The Alan Turing Institute 

        The challenges facing researchers are increasingly interdisciplinary. In this talk, Alan Wilson will present a view of the foundations of research planning which will support originality and ambition within interdisciplinary frameworks. He will discuss both basic and applied research ('real challenges') and will introduce the idea of super concepts that cross disciplines. Above all, he will argue that 'thinking outside the box' can generate new ideas and open up new territories.

        UCL Grand Challenges Small Grants 2017

        Deadline: 22 May

        Up to £4,000 available for a wide range of research-informed, societally relevant, cross-disciplinary activities undertaken from 1 August 2017 to 31 July 2018.

        Up to £6,000 is available for proposals that address the GCSC Priority Theme of Urban Mobility, with additional funding from the UCL Transport Institute. 

        Proposals must address a Priority Theme relating to one of the six UCL Grand Challenges and be led by UCL academic staff members (honorary researchers included) at postdoctoral level (or equivalent) or above.

        Eligible academic researchers:

        • must be based in different faculties 
        • must only submit one application as a First Applicant in this round
        • may also lead applications with research-users (as Second Applicants) who are based in UCL Professional Services

        UCL Research Staff Hub website

        The new UCL Research Staff Hub website, an online platform hosted by Organisational Development, provides a single point of access that supports self-service and the collection of evidence to demonstrate cross disciplinary research activities and development opportunities across UCL. The research-hub together with the bespoke research programmes are part of an initiative to enhance the provision for supporting the development of our UCL research staff.
