Project description: There has been increasing interest in the distribution of large earthquakes - both temporally and spatially - particularly in the commercial sector, where numerical models are based on Poissonian assumptions. Statistical investigation of the distribution of large earthquakes, however, has been restricted by the limited historical record available. This project uses proxies such as sub-marine deposits as a method by which earthquake records at subduction zones can be extended. Upon exploration of the statistical and physical links, the eventual aim will be to suggest alternative distributions that better reflect the behaviour of these extreme events, where Poissonian assumptions might be inappropriate
