Dr Christopher Kilburn
Christopher Kilburn is the Director of the Aon Benfield Hazard UCL Centre (ABUHC), Director of the UCL MSc in Geophysical Hazards, and a Principal Research Fellow in the UCL Department of Earth Sciences. He is a volcanologist with more than 25 years of experience of international research. In addition to UCL, he has worked in Italy at the Osservatorio Vesuviano, University of Naples and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia in Rome, as well as at the University of Vienna (Austria) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (California, U.S.A). His primary research fields in volcanology are (1) geophysical fluid dynamics, especially lava flows and landslides; (2) crustal deformation, especially applications to forecasting volcanic eruptions; and (3) the transfer of basic science to the design of strategies for mitigating natural hazards and for improving hazard awareness among vulnerable populations.
