IRDR0010 - Risk Analysis For Disaster Science

Risk, earthquake, seismology, statistical modelling, numerical modelling, earthquake science, seismic risk assessment

Module Tutor: Dr Katerina Stavrianaki, Prof Peter Sammonds

Module code: IRDR0010, 15 credits

Department: IRDR

This module is intended to provide students with an understanding of the fundamentals of earthquake exposure and vulnerabilities and risks associated with these. The module aims to take a modelling and statistical approach to earthquakes, based on modern observations from seismology and from space. The module will cover the understanding of the disaster chain that leads from the earthquake fault to seismic wave / structure interaction and the observational, modelling and statistical approaches to earthquake science. The students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate earthquake risk posed, including numerical and statistical modelling and understand the successes and limitations of statistical approaches to seismic risk assessment and the impact this has on our current mitigation strategies.
