Academic Support

Academic Support is part of UCL’s Professional Services. On 1 August 2011, the former Academic Services unit became a new department, entitled Academic Support, within the Registry and Academic Services division. Prior to that, on 3 May 2011, Academic Services merged with the Registry to form a new division, Registry and Academic Services, headed by Tim Perry as Director of Registry and Academic Services.

Based at 2 Taviton Street, we are a team of 8 staff, responsible for a range of UCL operations, including:

  • Governance and academic organisation.

    We co-ordinate the running of UCL’s network of formal committees; act as secretariat to the Council (the governing body of UCL) and the Academic Board (UCL’s senior academic authority); service other formal committees; offer guidance to colleagues across UCL on committee servicing and protocols; maintain UCL’s instruments of governance (the Charter, Statutes and Regulations for Management) and the schedule of academic units of UCL established by the Council;

  • Academic quality management and enhancement (QME).

    We organise and provide administrative and secretarial support to UCL's rolling programme of Internal Quality Review (IQR); co-ordinate UCL’s Annual Monitoring process; lead planning and preparations for external reviews of UCL academic quality and standards conducted by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA); support the development, through the UCL committees responsible, of QME policies and procedures; and maintain the UCL Academic Manual, which contains these policies and procedures;

  • Research governance.

    We maintain and support the development, through UCL’s Research Governance Committee, of UCL’s research governance framework; and co-ordinate and provide administrative support to panels investigating allegations of misconduct in academic research.

  • Senior academic staff appointments.

    We co-ordinate recruitment and selection processes for appointments to all Chairs (ie Professorships) and Readerships at UCL; and we administer the Provost’s consultations with staff on the appointment by UCL Council of Deans of Faculties and Heads of academic Departments.
