Eligibility Criteria for Ramsay Memorial Fellowships
1. Ramsay Memorial Fellowships were instituted in 1920 as a memorial to Sir William Ramsay (1852-1916), who was Professor of Inorganic and General Chemistry at UCL from 1887-1913 and Britain's very first recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, in 1904, for his discovery of the noble gases.

the Ramsay Memorial Fellowships Trust to postdoctoral chemists who have already had some
postdoctoral experience of research but who are in the early
stages of their career, so
that they may initiate a programme of original and independent research. Fellowships are usually tenable at a university or other place of academic

3. Preference will be given to candidates who have been born within the Commonwealth and who have graduated with distinction in chemistry from a university within the Commonwealth. In exceptional cases, the Trustees may award a Fellowship to a candidate whose academic distinction has been gained outside the Commonwealth.
4. Candidates will be expected to have had training in research leading to the possession of a PhD, preferably of a university within the British Commonwealth or its equivalent, and to show evidence of their ability to initiate and pursue a programme of independent research. Candidates cannot be considered unless they have submitted their PhD thesis by the 31 December following the deadline for receipt of applications. Great emphasis is placed by the Advisory Council on both the quality and the originality of the research proposed. The Advisory Council also takes into account evidence of mobility, at pre- or post-doctoral level and/or in the selection of the candidate’s proposed place of work. However, in doing so, it will also give consideration to any personal factors or circumstances that have impacted, or will be likely to impact, on this, eg parenting or caring responsibilities. Preference will also be given to early-career candidates.
5. An award of a Ramsay Fellowship will be based upon a proposal by a candidate to do specified research at a specified place, both to be approved by the Advisory Council. Generally, the specified place will be a university or other place of academic research within the United Kingdom. With the approval of the Advisory Council, the specified place may be varied from time to time, and, for limited periods, the Trustees will consider an overseas research visit if this is relevant to the Fellow’s project. The Advisory Council will look particularly favourably on applicants proposing to undertake their studies within the top-rated Department of Chemistry at UCL.
6. A Ramsay Fellowship will normally be tenable for a period of two years from 1 October in the year of award. In special circumstances, and with the approval of the Trustees, the beginning of the tenure may be deferred. In exceptional cases (for example, in instances where a Fellow is offered a temporary fixed-term academic position or wishes to give notice of parental leave), the Trustees may extend the Fellowship for a period up to, but not more than, a third year.
7. Although a Ramsay Fellowship may be fully funded by the Trust, the expectation is that it will normally be co-sponsored either by a university department, an industrial company or another body approved by the Trustees. Where a Fellowship is co-sponsored, the Trust will contribute 50% of the Fellow's total salary costs up to a maximum of £15,000 per annum, with the balance of all other costs to be paid by the co-sponsor. In addition, a grant of up to £1,000 per annum may be requested by the Fellow for (non-travel) research expenses which can be shown to be essential to the research work being undertaken.
8. A Fellowship is intended to enable the holder to devote her- or himself full time to research. However, the Trustees wish to encourage holders of Ramsay Fellowships to undertake a small amount of teaching work, not exceeding, on average, three hours a week, of which not more than one hour should be occupied in actual lecturing.
9. Towards the end of each academic session, a Fellow will be required to submit for the approval of the Advisory Council a report on the research work carried out with the aid of the Fellowship. Fellows must give due acknowledgement to the Ramsay Memorial Fellowships Trust (and any co-sponsoring body) in any papers published giving the results of this work.
10. No other Fellowship, Studentship, Scholarship or Lectureship may be held during the tenure of a Ramsay Memorial Fellowship, nor may any paid work be undertaken by a Fellow without the specific permission of the Trustees.
11. In no circumstances shall any candidate have any claim, otherwise than an award actually made, upon any Fund of the Foundation or upon the Trustees or Advisory Council, or upon any Trustee or any member of the Advisory Council.
12. Ramsay Fellowships continue to hold a high international reputation. The title of Ramsay Fellow is one which Fellows should feel proud to hold, not only during the tenure of their Fellowship, but throughout their career. The interest of the Trust in its Fellows continues after their Fellowships expire. Ramsay Fellows have the opportunity of meeting each other annually at a dinner given in their honour by the Ramsay Trust. Thus Ramsay Fellows remain members of a fellowship in the wider sense.
13. Applications for a British Ramsay Memorial Fellowship should be made on the prescribed application form and returned to the Executive Secretary, Ramsay Memorial Fellowships Trust, Academic Services, Student and Registry Services, University College London, 2 Taviton Street, London WC1E 6BT, UK (email: email@example.com), to arrive not later than 15 November of the year before the award.
14. Applications will be considered by the Ramsay Trustees and Advisory Council, and candidates will be notified in due course of their decision.
