UCL Qatar announces Dr Sam Evans CBE as new Director

UCL Qatar, a leading global centre of excellence for the study of cultural heritage, today announced the appointment of Dr Sam Evans CBE as its new Director. 

Speaking about the appointment Dr Evans shared that he aims to continue UCL’s ‘commitment to high academic standards, to maintaining quality and doing right by our students’. Speaking about the future Dr Evans stated ‘as we refocus and streamline our academic offering to 2020, I am delighted that UCL will continue to do so through working collaboratively with our close partners Qatar Foundation and Qatar Museums, and our esteemed colleagues at Hamad Bin Khalifa University and other local organisations’.

Joining UCL with a wealth of professional and academic experience, Dr Evans read Archaeology and Anthropology Tripos at the University of Cambridge, graduating with an MA (Cantab) in 1988.  He subsequently read Environmental Sciences and Plant Biochemistry in Italy, taking two Doctorates.  He also holds a University Diploma in Italian and graduated from the UK Defence Academy’s prestigious Royal College of Defence Studies in 2014.

With a diverse publications record Dr Evans has held a number of academic and visiting appointments in the UK and Europe, and joins UCL from his last post as a policy Deputy Director in a UK Department of State. He currently holds a Visiting Senior Research Fellowship at King’s College London.

In addition to his extensive academic background Dr Evans was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in Her Majesty the Queen’s 2007 New Year’s Honours List, and elevated to Commander of the same Order (CBE) in the 2014 New Year’s Honours List. He was awarded the US Bronze Star Medal by the President of the United States of America for meritorious service in 2008.

We will continue to help make a difference by contributing and sharing new knowledge, and by engaging with people in real world issues, working with them to makes changes for the better’.
