UCL Qatar Lecture Series - The Dome of the Rock: Meaning and Monumentality

30 March 2012

Dome of the Rock

The general public are cordially invited to attend the innaugural lecture of the UCL Qatar Lecture Series. Dr Timothy Power presents Dome of the Rock: Meaning and Monumentality.

The Dome of the Rock is one of the iconic monuments of the world. Its golden copula is an instantly recognisable symbol of the Holy Land and the aspirations of the Palestinian people. It is moreover revered by Muslims as the site where the Prophet ascended to heaven and as such is the third holiest site in Islam. This lecture explores its historical significance as the earliest monument of Islam, built a generation after the great Arab conquests.
