Visiting Researcher (2013)
Dr Alan Williams is an archaeometallurgist who works at The Wallace Collection, a national museum in London. He has been working on the metallurgy of medieval European armour and swords for many years. He holds a PhD in Archaeometallurgy from the University of Manchester, as well as a BSc in Chemistry.
Dr Williams is conducting research at UCL Qatar in collaboration with Professor Thilo Rehren, examining the metallurgy of Islamic swords. Many Islamic swords show a unique metallurgy, not paralleled in Europe, since they were made of crucible steel which could be manipulated to give patterned blades of the famous “Damascus Steel”. In addition to conducting research, Dr Williams will contribute to teaching, primarily on the Archaeology of the Arab and Islamic World MA.
