Pioneering research on museums and collecting practices in the GCC

Dr Karen Exell, Lecturer in Museum Studies at UCL Qatar, researches and publishes on past and contemporary museum developments in the GCC, and their socio-cultural impact. Over the past year Dr Exell has undertaken several field visits to museums in the region and has interviewed numerous private individuals and collectors in order to better understand the nature of museum developments and collecting practices in the region. This mapping project has resulted in a wealth of data that will form the basis of a book on museums in the GCC to be published in 2015. More...

Origins of Doha

UCL and QNRF to host Heritage of Doha, Identity of Qatar workshop

On 5 November 2014 UCL Qatar alongside Qatar National Research Fund (QNFR) will host a public workshop Heritage of Doha, Identity of Qatar. The workshop will present the work of UCL Qatar’s QNRF-funded Origins of Doha project, including the results of the joint Qatar Museums-UCL Qatar excavations in central Doha. These archaeological findings will then be used to explore the history and people of Doha, the transformation of the traditional town to a modern city, and the experience of its inhabitants through time.
