Student engager of the year

Nadia Abdul-Karim, UCL Chemistry and UCL Security and Crime Science

Nadia Abdul-Karim, winner of the 2014 prize for public engager of the year (student)

Nadia has shown real organisation and drive to become a leader in public engagement, not only in her two departments (Security and Crime Science and Chemistry) but among fellow PhD students across UCL.

Nadia's collaborative leadership style ensured the success of the recent SuperLAB project, which brought scientists together with an adult audience, tackling science subjects in the context of superheroes and villains.

The panel were impressed with the range of Nadia's public work as well as the obvious energy and enthusiasm that fuels her commitment to sharing what happens in academia with a wider public.

Her broad public engagement and widening participation portfolio includes being a Brilliant Club tutor, student mentor, taster lecturer, schools outreach, public lecturer, Institute of Making volunteer, STEM ambassador and science blogger.
