Unearthing Lexden: Engaging the Community around Lexden Earthworks

Angela Horan-Anderson, Institute of Archaeology, UCL

The project intends to raise awareness of the presence and relevance of the Lexden Earthworks and Bluebottle Grove for the community which surrounds it, through a number of workshops with local schools to generate materials for a public exhibition.

Lexden Earthworks and Bluebottle Grove (LEBG) is a scheduled ancient monument and English Heritage Free Site which sits amidst the suburban community of Lexden, west of Colchester in Essex. Currently, the site is not well understood by its local community -  although it is used as a popular path for dog walkers, pedestrians, and joggers - and is frequently subjected to vandalism, including the removal and/or destruction of its interpretive panels.
