Patrick Luyten

Patrick Luyten, PhD is Senior Lecturer at the Research Department of Clinical, Educational, and Health Psychology at University College London, London (UK) and Program Tutor of the Expanded Doctoral School in Psychoanalytic Studies. He is also Assistant Professor and Co-Director of the Psychoanalysis Unit at the Department of Psychology, University of Leuven (Belgium).


His research interests focus on the role of personality, stress regulation and interpersonal processes in the causation and treatment of depression, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. He is currently also involved in studies on mentalization-based treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder, as well as in more basic research concerning (parental) mentalization. He has published on the relationship between mental health and religion and the epistemological status of psychoanalysis. He is a Visiting Professor at the Yale Child Study Center, New Haven (USA), and member of the Evaluation of Research Proposals and Results Subcommittee of the International Research Board of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). He serves on the editorial board of several journals, including Psychotherapy: Theory, Research, Practice, Training; Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, and Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology. He is also the recipient of the 2009 Psychoanalytic Research Exceptional Contributions Award from the International Psychoanalytical Association.
