Mary Target
Mary Target PhD is a psychoanalyst and clinical psychologist, Professor of Psychoanalysis at UCL, Director of the Psychoanalysis Unit and Director of the MSc in Theoretical Psychoanalytic Studies.. She is Professional Director of the Anna Freud Centre, London, where she is also Academic and Research Organiser of the Doctorate in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy. She holds an associate clinical professorship at Yale University (New Haven, CT), and is a member of the faculty at the University of Turin.
Mary Target teaches and supervises UCL students on four Masters programmes, and the PhD, DClinPsy and DPsych degree programmes. She is primary supervisor to six current PhD students, and has supervised 15 completed PhDs. Her research is currently in the areas of social and emotional development and attachment, personality functioning in adulthood, the process and outcome of psychotherapies, qualitative research on the experience of illness, models of clinical training and psychoanalytic conceptualization. She is a Principal Investigator on seven current research grants.
She has active international academic collaborations with colleagues at Yale University, New Haven, and the Université Laval, Quebec. She has institutional consultation responsibilities at the Netherlands Psychoanalytic Institute, Amsterdam, and the Masonic Center for Children and Families, San Francisco. She co-leads training courses with Prof Alessandra Lemma and Prof Peter Fonagy in Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy, and supervises several practitioners in this approach. She also runs trainings in Reflective Function coding, the Child Attachment Interview, and Mentalization-Based Treatment for Families.
Her main current administrative position in psychoanalysis is as Honorary Secretary of the British Psycho-Analytical Society, of which she is a Fellow. Previous positions within that Society have included chairing the Research Committee and the Universities Liaison Committee, and being Hon Sec of the Curriculum Committee. She was the founding Chair of the Working Party on Psychoanalytic Education for the European Psychoanalytic Federation, 2001-4. She chaired the Psychotherapy Section of the British Psychological Society 2005-8, with membership of the Representative Council and Research Boards. She is currently a member of the Research Committee and the Psychoanalysis and the Universities Committee of the International Psychoanalytic Association. She is Joint Series Editor of the Karnac Series in Psychoanalysis, and of the Yale Series on Developmental Science and Psychoanalysis. She is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, the New Israel Psychoanalytic Annual, and has served on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and the New Library of Psychoanalysis.
She has served as External Examiner for the Society for Analytical Psychology’s professional analytic training since 2007, and is External Examiner for a number of graduate academic programmes in the psychoanalytic field.
She is committed to clinical psychoanalysis and has maintained a half-time adult analytic practice since 1997, based at the Anna Freud Centre.
