Anthony Bateman
Anthony
Bateman, MA FRCPsych is a Visiting Professor in the Psychoanalysis
Unit at University College London. He is a Consultant Psychiatrist
and Psychotherapist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College
and Royal Free Medical Schools, Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey Mental
Health NHS Trust, and St Ann's Hospital, London. He is also a Visiting
Consultant at the Menninger Clinic, Baylor College of Medicine,
Houston Texas and a Clinical Tutor at Barnet, Enfield & Haringey
Mental Health Care Trust.
In collaboration with Peter Fonagy he has developed and manualised an innovative treatment for personality disorder (Mentalisation Based Treatment - MBT), trained nurses and others in its implementation and subjected the treatment to clinical trials. He organised and successfully completed the first randomised controlled trial of day treatment of personality disorder in the UK and is now investigating the effective elements of treatment and undertaking a further randomised controlled trial of a less intensive out-patient treatment. Importantly treatment is implemented by nurses and other generic mental health professionals making it generalisable to other services in the NHS.The research has led to major national and international interest because treatment was found to be more effective than standard care. He supervises treatment in three replication sites - the UK, Holland, and Norway. He also leads research into local counselling services in primary care in conjunction with local GPs and is studying the interaction of personality disorder on outcome of brief therapy for anxiety and depression.
With Peter Fonagy, he regularly runs training courses in MBT. Click here for more information about the course. The powerpoint slides used in the training course are available to download here.
He has published numerous chapters and articles and has authored
or edited several books. His most recent books include Psychotherapy
for Borderline Personality Disorder: Mentalization Based Treatment
(with P. Fonagy - published 2004 by Oxford University Press), Integration
in psychotherapy: models and methods (with J. Holmes - published
2002 by Oxford University Press) and Introduction to Psychotherapy
- an outline of psychodynamic principles and practice (with D. Brown
and J. Pedder - published 2001 by Routledge).
