LOVE: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINAR

This is the inter-faculty collaboration by the Psychoanalysis Unit bringing together staff at UCL with an interest in psychoanalysis.

After the seminar, you are invited to a reception in the Wilkins Old Refectory, UCL.

These seminars which are held once a term, form part of a wider project of collaboration, both formal and informal, between staff and students in different departments at UCL.

Semir Zeki – (Department of Cell and Developmental Biology UCL)

‘The Neurobiology of Love’

Professor S Zeki is currently Professor of Neuroesthetics at UCL, having previously been Professor of Neurobiology. His main interest has been the functional organization of the visual brain. More recently, he has also been interested in the question of how a visual input triggers an affectivestate such as the experience of love, desire and beauty.

Michael Brearley

‘The analyst's love for the patient’

Michael Brearley is a psychoanalyst in London, and was until recently President of the British Psychoanalytical Society. He has taught psychoanalytic topics there and elsewhere. He writes and gives talks on psychoanalysis. He occasionally gives talks or seminars on subjects such as team-building and motivation. He continues to write occasionally on cricket. Earlier he was a Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and played cricket for professionally, captaining Middlesex for twelve years, and England in 31 Tests. He wrote The Art of Captaincy (1985) and has been President of MCC.

Enrico Palandri – (School of EU Languages, Culture and Society, UCL)

‘The love of characters’

Enrico Palandri (1956) is the author of seven novels, a collection of short stories and four literary essays. His works have been translated in several languages and awarded prestigious prizes. Over the years has written for  Cinema and texts for Contemporary Music as well as contributing regularly to several Italian newspapers and appearing as a guest in Radio and Tv programmes, both in Italy and UK.  He teaches in Ca' Foscari, Venice and UCL, London.

Chair: Lesley Caldwell, (Psychoanalysis Unit and Department of Italian, UCL)

Lesley Caldwell is a psychoanalyst in private practice in London. She is Honorary Reader in the Psychoanalysis unit where she organises the interdisciplinary seminars, and teaches and supervises on the doctoral programme and the Masters in theoretical psychoanalysis.  She is the current chair of the Winnicott Trust and one of its editors. She is also Hon Senior Research Fellow in the Italian department at UCL Her most recent publications are Reading Winnicott, with Angela Joyce (Routledge/New Library teaching series) and ‘Italian, Psychoanalysis, and the Humanities,’ (Journal of Romance Studies, special issue) edited with Francesco Capello.  Rome: Continuing Encounters with Past and Present (Ashgate) co-edited with Dorigen Caldwell.
