Fundamentals of Psychoanalytic Theory: Freud Reading Seminars
Autumn Term 2009-2010
(This unit runs for the entire year)
Aim: the unit aims to acquaint the student with the basic concepts of psychoanalysis developed by Freud, and with the changes in his thinking and the reasons for these.
Objective: students should read and gain familiarity with the major theoretical and clinical papers of Sigmund Freud, and be able to show critical awareness of the major models of the mind which he put forward, and of the shifts in his formulations through his working life.

We will be covering Freud's pioneering work on hysteria in his early years. Please look through the cases of Miss Lucy R, Katharina and Fraulein Elisabeth von R. in Studies on Hysteria (S.E.2) (ie. familiarise yourself with these cases, you do not need to know the text well).
