MSc in Theoretical Psychoanalytic Studies
Clinical Papers
Discussion Seminars
2009-2010
Coordinator: Prof. Mary Target
(These seminars run throughout the year)
These informal seminars will use a series of clinical reports and discussions to familiarise students with the more contemporary psychoanalytic scene(s). We will also use these cases as a basis to discuss and deepen awareness of clinical concepts (e.g. transference, countertransference, resistance) and diagnostic ideas (e.g. narcissistic or borderline personality functioning). Along the way, we will think about how psychoanalytic writers use clinical material to develop, illustrate and/or justify their theoretical or technical positions. These seminars will not be specifically examined and are meant to enrich background knowledge and to increase familiarity with the atmosphere and processes of clinical analytic work, including giving an opportunity to discuss its opportunities, problems and limitations as a method of treatment. Issues of confidentiality and different perspectives will be a theme, as well as what an interpretation is in technique.
After the introductory seminar, students will be asked to volunteer to present the clinical material and each commentary (i.e. 3 students per seminar, presenting for about 20 minutes (case), 10 minutes and 10 minutes (two commentaries), respectively). All students will be expected to have read and thought about the material and commentaries beforehand and to contribute to the discussion, but in this way most students get a chance to take more of a leading role in one seminar as well. Students who have clinical experience and whose English is already fluent will be asked to be ready to do this earlier in the year.
