Assessment for the Foundation Course Optional Pathway

In order to pass the MSc programme (180 credits) students need to pass all of the following elements of assessment:

Essays

Each taught module is assessed by an essay of no more than 2,500 words each including everything (footnotes, text references, etc) except the cover sheet, bibliography and an appendix (if used). Full-time students complete 4 essays to be submitted throughout the year. Flexible/Modular students submit an essay for each module they register for, to be submitted at the end of the summer term.

Examinations

Each taught module is assessed by an unseen two-hour written exam in June. In each exam students answer two questions. Full-time students sit 4 exams and flexible/modular students sit an exam for each module they register for.

Dissertation (60 credits)

The dissertation (between 8,000 and 10,000 words) is submitted in mid-August. The dissertation allows the student the fullest opportunity to show the quality of his or her independent reading and thinking.

Assessment for the Institute of Psychoanalysis Foundation Course Optional Pathway

While all the Foundation Course teaching takes place at the Institute of Psychoanalysis, students will be assessed on the theoretical (lecture) material by UCL for MSc module 99PSGFC1 – Foundation Course (30 credits). The assessment will be by one 2,500 word essay and one examination (2 hours, 2 questions).  Specific essay and exam questions are devised for students taking module 99PSGFC1, which are appropriate to their Foundation Course learning.
