Summer Course in English Phonetics

Teaching Staff

The course Director is Michael Ashby, Honorary Senior Lecturer in Phonetics at UCL, and pronunciation editor of the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary. The IPA Certificate strand will be led by Dr Patricia Ashby, Emeritus Fellow to the University of Westminster and National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, author of the popular textbook Speech Sounds (second edition, 2005) and of Understanding Phonetics (2011).

Other lecturers will include (subject to confirmation):
  • Professor J. C. Wells, Emeritus Professor of Phonetics at UCL, author of the Longman Pronunication Dictionary (third edition, 2008) and English Intonation (2006).
  • Dr Beverley Collins, Centre for Linguistics, University of Leiden, Netherlands, and Visiting Professor, Department of English, Ghent University, Belgium, co-author of Practical Phonetics and Phonology (second edition, 2008)
  • Dr Jane Setter, Director, English Pronunciation Research Unit, Department of Applied Linguistics, University of Reading, joint editor of the Cambridge English Pronouncing Dictionary (18th edition, 2011)
All practical classes will be led by phoneticians and experienced EFL specialists.
