Research Interests
My PhD research is the continuation of experiments performed as a collaborator in a team of researchers in Japan. On that occasion, we took an initial view on the effect of sentence type on the perception Japanese students of Spanish had of the position of Spanish stress. This time, I want to examine those results deeper, and to look at the other side of the picture as well, working with Spanish speakers studying Japanese. I am interested in looking at the way in which suprasegmental traits from a second language are acquired, since there seems to be plenty of research being done on what happens at the segmental level.
These interests are not new. With Spanish as my native language, I have always been interested in the nature of lexical stress: how it is produced and perceived, the effects it has on the way people pronounce words and on how these words change over time, and how some languages completely ignore it while others base meaningful contrasts based on its position. At the same time, my interest in second language learning stems from my own experiences studying Japanese and the insight it gave me into the difficulties it entails.
My research if funded by CONICYT, the Chilean National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research.
