I retired in 2006 after 34 years as Head of Linguistics, taking with me a Festschrift from colleagues and former students: Language in Mind: A Tribute to Neil Smith on the Occasion of his Retirement (edited by Robyn Carston, Diane Blakemore and Hans van de Koot as a special issue of Lingua volume 116:10.

In 2010 I published a monograph Acquiring Phonology: A Cross-generational Case-study, documenting the linguistic development of my grandson and recalling the documentation of his father’s development in my 1973 monograph The Acquisition of Phonology.

In 2011, in collaboration with Ianthi Tsimpli, Gary Morgan and Bencie Woll, I published another monograph The Signs of a Savant: Language against the Odds, building on our earlier book The Mind of a Savant (Smith & Tsimpli, 1995). This brings to a conclusion some twenty year work on the polyglot savant Christopher (generously supported by the Leverhulme Trust).

I have a continuing interest in the thought of Noam Chomsky, in parametric variation and in birdsong (see my work with Ann Law), but the main focus of my current research is on Combinatory Categorial Grammar. Annabel Cormack and I are building on nearly 20 years collaboration to write a minimalist CCG monograph on Interfaces: Syntax, Semantics and the Language of Thought.

I do considerable editorial work:  I have been one of the editors of Lingua for 25 years, I am one of the founder editors of Mind & Language, and I am on the board of editors of CUP's Cambridge Studies in Linguistics.

Further details of how I became a linguist and of my subsequent career can be found in my ‘Personal history’ reproduced from Brown & Law’s Linguistics in Britain: Personal Histories (Smith 2002c). This also includes a summary account of the historical development of linguistics at UCL while I was in charge.
