Our research
The Research Department of Linguistics has an eminent reputation for its work in theoretical linguistics, which has attracted significant AHRC funding. Its members carry out research aimed at discovering the nature and origin of the abstract principles and representations that characterise the form, acquisition and use of human language. The group is interested in many aspects of language, ranging from core grammatical knowledge (phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics) and the interpretation of utterances in context (pragmatics) to aspects of normal and abnormal language development (language acquisition, infant communicative development, and specific language impairment) and language impairments in aphasia and dementia.

Prospective research students
Our department provides the ideal environment for research students. You will have the opportunity for daily interaction with fellow students and academics in your field, and you will be supervised by staff engaged in world-class research. We offer advanced courses in theoretical linguistics (including access to advanced training through ACTL) alongside training in research methods and skills (through UCL's Graduate School). You will also take part in specialized reading groups, and in seminar series and workshops both within the Department and in the Centre for Human Communication.
If you are interested in working with one of us, then you should in the first instance make contact with the relevant member of staff via email. This will give you and us an opportunity to work out if there is a good match between your research interest and ours, before you go through the formal application process.
Prospective taught students
The department delivers the teaching for four Masters programmes in Linguistics: the MA Linguistics, and the research-preparation programmes MA Syntax, MA Pragmatics and MA Phonology. In addition, it contributes to the MRes Speech, Language and Cognition (established by the Centre for Human Communication) and to the MSc Neuroscience, Language and Communication. Finally, the department also provides all the teaching for the BA Linguistics and the BA Linguistics International Programme.
