Software for video and audio manipulation

Dropbox software

Click on the link above to find out more about Dropbox file syncing and sharing - it's free and very useful if you want to keep files on different computers updated (without constantly using a datakey!).
There's also the facility to have a public folder on your desktop to which invited people can access individual files - e.g. a video data files.

Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD

Allows you to edit mpeg video clips on your computer. Features include captions, ability to make compilations of short clips, 'clean-up' features such as brightness and volume adjustment, fade in/fade out. Use this software to make clips for presentations, and to make collections of phenomena from a larger data sample for transcription.

Virtual Dub

Allows you to strip the audio stream from an mpeg video clip, and save it as a .wav file for speech analysis, in PRAAT for example. Features include filters such as 'low pass' to clean up the sound quality.

Software for Transcription

Videolab

A tool developed in the Department of Human Communication Science, UCL, which combines microsoft word with a video playback system to allow you to transcribe data.

If you have problems downloading it, contact Mike Coleman, 02076794213. Currently there is no videolab tutorial available, but you will find a document giving guidance on its use by following the link above.

Elan

A tool for transcription which allows you to annotate features such as gesture, eye gaze etc. on different tiers. These are displayed over time on screen, so you get a picture of how features overlap. It is possible to annotate a speech wave as well as a video clip. Currently being used by DCAL to analyse sign language.
