  • Congratulations to Firle Beckley, Research Associate, on being awarded a prestigious Stroke Association Junior Research Training Fellowship to fund her PhD. She will investigate the evidence base for conversation therapy in aphasia by determining which components of the intervention are crucial for effecting conversation change (education versus training), and by exploring whether cognitive flexibility influences therapy efficacy. Her primary supervisor will be Suzanne Beeke, and her secondary supervisor Wendy Best.
  • Clinical Doctorate and PhD students in the Division recently hosted a successful lunchtime poster session as part of module HCSCRS04 Exploring Academic Writing and Reading. Many thanks to staff and students who came along.
  • Slideshow and downloads of the students’ posters
  • Professor Rosemary Varley has joined the department. Her research focuses on developing biologically plausible accounts of human cognition, particularly in the domains of speech and language, and language-linked cognitive function.
  • Congratulations to Helen Davey (2011 BSc Speech Sciences graduate) whohas been awarded the Student Project Prize of the British Aphasiology Society for her project entitled ‘Getting into shape: The effect of Shape Coding on the spoken language production of a man with chronic aphasia’. This is a prestigious national prize, awarded to the best student project in the UK on any topic relating to acquired aphasia. • Congratulations to Dr Suzanne Beeke, Principal Investigator on the new ESRC funded project From communication disorders research to conversation-based interventions for adults with aphasia: Effective interventions to improve the everyday conversational abilities of adults with aphasia are considered vital to long term psychosocial health and wellbeing. This project will provide effective conversation-based interventions for people with aphasia, and enhance the professional practice of SLTs by (i) producing a specific resource for planning and delivering conversation-based interventions for aphasia, and (ii) providing accessible and up to date knowledge about its theoretical basis and the analysis of conversation data, in order to respond to SLTs' perceived lack of skill in this area. The resource will be an archive of video clips, associated therapy materials and study materials for the SLT to support their knowledge and skills. In addition, we will set up an online Conversation Therapy Network for peer support and expert advice. Our project partners are Connect and the Tavistock Trust for Aphasia.Co-Is: Dr Wendy Best (Developmental Science), Professor Jane Maxim (Language and Communication) and Professor Susan Edwards (Reading). Duration: 1 year starting from February 2012
