Abstract:Cognitive ability and mental health are arguably two of the most important aspects of child functioning, and both have long-term effects on a range of outcomes. Although studies of children in clinical samples have shown substantial comorbidity between cognitive and behaviour problems, research has not shown how cognitive ability and mental health combine in the general child population, and over time. For this study we used data on 13,058 children participating in the Millennium Cohort Study to identify parallel developmental trajectories of internalizing/externalizing symptoms and cognitive ability from ages 3 to 11 years.
