Student Tutoring and Mentoring at UCL
The UCL student tutoring and mentoring programmes are UCL Outreach initiatives run in London schools. We aim to raise young people’s attainment and encourage them to consider higher education. The schemes provide young people with the opportunity to spend focused time on their studies, as well as thinking about their personal development and aspirations for the future. Being able to learn from the experiences of a student already in higher education will greatly contribute towards their development.
We currently work with schools in the boroughs across London, placing around 150 tutors and mentors each year.
How to apply
Application
Due to the overwhelming response we have received, application for tutoring and mentoring in the academic year 2011/12 has now closed.
Thank you to everyone for applying. Those who completed the Consultation Booking form will be contacted very shortly to confirm the date of interview.
Tutoring
A tutor provides extra support either to an individual or small group of school students. Tutoring currently takes place in primary and secondary schools and sixth form colleges.
In primary schools tutors may involve offering one-to-one reading support, often to children who speak English as an additional language. You could also be helping a small group with activities to help boost their skills in a particular subject. In secondary schools and sixth forms, we try to match the tutors by subject. This will be a subject that you are either currently studying or studied to A-Level or equivalent.
Tutors work in the classroom under the supervision of the class teacher and the role varies depending on the school, the year group you work with, and what is agreed with the class teacher.
Mentoring
The role of a mentor involves listening, advising, supporting, coaching, encouraging, constructively criticising and guiding, usually in a one to one situation. Mentors usually work with pupils in secondary schools or sixth form colleges.
The UCL mentoring programme aims to provide guidance and increase the self-confidence of young people in confidential, one-to-one meetings on school premises. It provides schools with an additional resource to help their students achieve the most they can. It is also hoped that mentors will act as role models for the young people.
UCL mentors are matched with a school and a mentee, and meet with their mentee regularly throughout one academic year, during which time they will establish a relationship which allows the setting of realistic targets for the mentee to achieve. By achieving these targets with the help, support and guidance of the mentor, the confidence of the mentee improves, allowing them to make the most of their talents and make their own, well-informed decisions about their future.
