Language and Study Skills Summer School

The UCL Language and Study Skills Summer School is for students in year 12 and 13 who do not have a foreign language GCSE at grade C or above. Participants will have the opportunity to learn a language intensively over a two week period.

The Language and Study Skills Summer School is residential. Students will stay in UCL halls of residence in central London, a short walk away from the campus. There are 40 year 12 places available on and the summer school will take place from Sunday 28 July to Friday 9 August 2013.

Upon completion of the summer school, participants will meet UCL’s modern foreign language course requirement.

Academic Programme

Students will take part in 4 hours of intensive language lessons each morning, with 2-3 hours of self-study each afternoon to reinforce and practice what has been learnt in class. Language classes will be taught by experienced language teachers from the UCL Centre for Languages & International Education.

Students can choose to learn one of the following languages:

  • Arabic
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Mandarin
  • Spanish

We will also provide academic skills sessions in the afternoons, with a focus on learning techniques for university study and raising academic achievement. Participants will also be given a project brief which they will work to over the duration of the summer school.

Other activities

In the evening and at weekends there will be a full programme of social activities. You’ll get to know your fellow students and have the opportunity to explore some of the varied attractions that London has to offer. Examples of activities could include visits to Shakespeare's Globe, a Thames boat tour, and various other opportunities.

Background to the Languages and Study Skills Summer School

The UCL Language and Study Skills Summer School is part of UCL’s Access Agreement

UCL has introduced a GCSE Modern Foreign Language course requirement for all UCL undergraduate students. At UCL, we believe that knowledge of a modern foreign language and the possession of intercultural skills are an integral part of a 21st century education.

The Languages and Study Skills Summer School is intended to offer additional support to students from under-represented backgrounds to learn a language and will also seek to raise the A Level attainment of its participants through intensive study skills sessions that will assist them in their studies at school.

Who is eligible?

The Language and Study Skills Summer School is open to students (home UK only) currently studying in Year 12 or equivalent at maintained schools or colleges in the UK.

Year 12s who wish to apply must not have a foreign language GCSE. Applicants must also have already achieved UCL's other minimum requirements at GCSE level and be on track to achieve UCL's minimum grade requirements at A/S and A level.

Priority will be given to students who meet all or most of the following criteria:

  • will be the first generation in their family to attend university
  • have achieved at least 5 A/A*s at GCSE
  • come from neighbourhoods with low overall progression rates to higher education
  • are taking relevant subjects in relation to the subject stream they are applying for
