The Ethical and Societal Implications of Space Exploration

Recent advances in planetary science, such as robotic exploration of Mars and the discovery of increasingly Earth-like planets orbiting other stars in the galaxy, have given us growing confidence that conditions suitable for life could exist beyond the Earth. In the light of these recent exciting discoveries, what value does space exploration have for human beings? What would the implications of finding life be to society as a whole? We will also look at some of the ethical implications: should we send humans on a Mars mission before we've been able to rule-out native life? Do we have the 'right' to use other planets, for our own ends?
