History and Philosophy of Science

Crystal Palace Dinosaurs

London is home to the world’s first full-size, action-packed, three-dimensional models of dinosaurs and other prehistoric beasts. They’re in the park at Crystal Palace, and they were created in 1854 by an artist famous for taking his science seriously. In my session, we’ll examine those sculptures. We’ll explore what they say about the history of science and about Victorian London. We’ll also explore how this case speaks to general ideas in “science and society”. Not only do these sculptures tell us about the past, they also speak about the future.
