Mapping the City in film

Cinema and the modern metropolis were born hand in hand. Cities are made to be turned into 'cine-quilts' - kaleidoscopic tapestries of diversity and difference. In these two sessions we will look at the way film has been used to explore London from the first documentaries through to the latest interactive video projects. In the lecture you will get a taste of some of the greatest films shot in London - making the familiar strange and puzzling - and in the seminar we will look at two different interactive video projects that use modern technology to create rich and complex ethnographies of the modern city. You will have a chance to think about what films of the city you would make about life in London today.
