Human Language: when does learning begin?

Are the origins of language innate in the human infant, or is the process of language development driven by external factors like mother’s speech? This Nature vs. Nurture debate has fascinated philosophers and scientists for thousands of years. In the 21st century new scientific techniques are allowing unprecedented access to early stage development. In the lecture we will present video data and recent neuroscientific findings which bear on these issues. In the subsequent seminar we will encourage you to explore the language learning process for yourself, and see where you stand on the Nature/Nurture debate.
