From Anti-Slavery to Stop Kony: NGOs in History and Today

This session will explore the evolution of NGOs (non-governmental organisations) and human rights campaigns from the eighteenth century anti-slavery campaign to the UN Declaration of Human Rights and the 2012 Stop Kony campaign. It will examine how NGOs began and how they have changed over the centuries. We will look at some examples of successful campaigns, as well as some of the challenges facing international NGOs and human rights campaigns in history and today. This session would be excellent for anyone interested in history, politics, international relations, overseas development, and the work of international charities and human rights organisations.
