History of Art with Material Studies BA - Azmina Abdulla

Student profile: Azmina Abdulla

Degree: History of Art with Material Studies BA
Second year
Subject area: History of Art

UCL is one of the few places in the UK that offers a degree in History of Art with Material Studies (HAMS)and the programme is brilliant! Mixing practical conservation techniques and ethical issues around the field, it is really a fantastic programme for anyone interested in the care of works of art. The History of Art Department offers interdisciplinary courses, ranging from philosophy to chemistry for the HAMS degree. One of my favorite resources is the Materials Lab, where all sorts of pigments and materials can be found! In terms of classes, I've very much enjoyed all my seminars, particularly the ones related to modernism and photography. After completing my degree, I hope to work in the curatorial and conservation field.

London is a vibrant and multi-cultural city and undoubtedly one of the best cities to study the History of Art. The diversity in museums, galleries and art fairs is impressive and really complement my studies. The Art section of the Main Library has some fantastic books for my courses and I always found the staff to be really helpful in helping students to find resources for their course work.

With a friend also studying History of Art, we have developed HART magazine, which was previously an online publication for our department. Now it is also available in print and available in the department and has recently attracted a lot of students, providing a fun yet academic platform for our peers!
