Engineering (Mechanical) MEng

This MEng equips you with the fundamental skills necessary for employment as a professional engineer in many sectors of industry and commerce. Applying for the MEng rather than the BEng allows students to fulfil the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer status, using a single qualification.

A Levels

Grades AAA-AAB
Subjects Mathematics and Physics grade A required.
AS Levels For UK-based students a pass in a further subject at AS level or equivalent is required.
GCSEs English Language and Mathematics at grade C. For UK-based students, a grade C or equivalent in a foreign language (other than Ancient Greek, Biblical Hebrew or Latin) is required.   • The programme is highly respected both within the UK and abroad. It is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and meets the educational requirements to obtain Chartered Engineer status.

The MEng programme is similar to the BEng programme for the first two years and you can transfer between them at the end of the second year, depending on certain criteria. Applying for an MEng initially helps keep your options open, and it provides additional depth and breadth in design, engineering science, group project work and management.

The programme offers a wide choice of optional courses in the later years. Courses are grouped under the following headings: Applied mechanics and materials; Fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, and Management and production engineering.

You will choose one heading at the end of your second year and focus on courses in this selected area. Other optional courses are available, including a modern language. You will undertake a substantial individual project in year three, and participate in a group design project in the final year.

Your learning

You will be taught in a variety of ways, including lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes, computer workshops and project work. Along with our computing facilities we have extensive equipment and apparatus, housed in our main laboratories, which are used for taught laboratory classes and for your project work.

Assessment

Most subjects are examined through a combination of end-of-year examinations and coursework, but some are solely examined through coursework, for example, computing, design and projects. To remain on the MEng programme you are required to maintain a standard equivalent to (at least) lower second-class Honours level throughout your studies.

Degree structure

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual courses, normally valued at 0.5 or 1.0 credits, adding up to a total of 4.0 credits for the year. Courses are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional courses varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 1.0 credit is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Extramural Year

Students may opt to take a year working in industry between the third and the fourth years of the programme. This posting needs College approval in advance, and students are required to write a comprehensive report on their work and what they have learnt during the year. The report is assessed, and the marks are given some weighting in the overall classification of the degree.

How to apply

Application for admission should be made through UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). Applicants currently at school or college will be provided with advice on the process; however, applicants who have left school or who are based outside the United Kingdom may obtain information directly from UCAS.

Selection

If you are based in the UK and, from your application, appear likely to achieve our academic requirements it is our practice to interview you before deciding whether to offer you a place. Your visit will consist of a tour of UCL, a visit to the department's laboratories, and the interview. You may also be asked to take a short aptitude test.

If you are based outside the UK you may receive an offer without interview, but you are encouraged to visit us if you are able.

The department is happy to defer your entry, provided you are doing something constructive in your gap year. UCL supports the Year in Industry scheme, providing you with the opportunity to spend a year working in industry prior to starting your degree, or part way through it.
