This four-year programme builds on the knowledge and experience offered in the Civil Engineering BEng programme with a final-year design project and advanced courses, and is a direct route to Chartered (CEng) Status. You are advised to apply for the MEng programme initially, as this offers more flexibility.

English language requirements
If English is not your first language you will also need to satisfy UCL's English Language Requirements. A variety of English language programmes are offered at the UCL Centre for Languages & International Education.

- The programme is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) and meets the requirements for a direct route to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Our degrees are flexible and after the first year you may choose courses to build a degree that suits your skills and interests. For all degree programmes offered by the department you will follow a common introduction to civil and environmental engineering. The first two years focus on the theoretical basis of civil and environmental engineering and geoinformatics structured around a series of multi-disciplinary projects (scenarios) based on realistic engineering problems. These projects are taught in five-week blocks, with the fifth week used to put your acquired knowledge into practice through a series of problem-solving scenarios.
In years three and four, a broad selection of advanced options is provided to enable you to pursue your specialist interests. You will undertake a substantial research project in year three and a major integrated design project in year four.
Another possibility is to join the International Programme in year three which enables students to spend their third year in a selected university in Europe (France, Germany, spain, Italy), the USA, Hong Kong, Japan or Australia.
Your teaching will include lectures, seminars, problem-solving classes, tutorials, laboratory classes and site visits. Practising engineers contribute to the teaching and this, combined with your involvement in site visits, will ensure your studies are as relevant as possible to current practice and problems. A series of multi-disciplinary projects are carried out at the end of each five-week period.
Assessment is through a combination of coursework and end-of-year examinations.
In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual courses, normally valued at 0.5 or 1.0 credits, adding up to a total of 4.0 credits for the year. Courses are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional courses varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 1.0 credit is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

In addition to core engineering skills, the programme places emphasis on the development of transferable skills such as information technology, geographical information systems and communication skills, all of which will be essential in your future career.

Our well rounded graduates are increasingly sought in professions beyond engineering, including banking, law and advertising.

Together with academic requirements, we expect you to demonstrate a clear understanding of the programme and your commitment to it. Evidence of your enthusiasm and proven leadership skills demonstrated through previous educational and personal experience will help your application. Any potentially extenuating circumstances are taken into account and we look carefully at your referees comments for insight into these.

Application for admission should be made through UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). Applicants currently at school or college will be provided with advice on the process; however, applicants who have left school or who are based outside the United Kingdom may obtain information directly from UCAS.
A positive assessment of your application, if you live in the UK, will result in an invitation to one of our 'selection afternoons'. You will work with a small group of other applicants on an open-ended problem. Your contribution will be observed and will be considered when formulating any offer.
Where distance makes attendance at a selection afternoon impractical, we will base our decision on your application.
