Applied Medical Sciences BSc

This BSc spans both medical and science disciplines with reference to human health and disease. Innovative teaching methods and social media will play a key role in teaching and assessment. Graduates will develop a strong clinical background which will be advantageous when applying for posts where knowledge of clinical medicine is an advantage.

English Language Requirements
If English is not your first language you will also need to satisfy UCL's English Language Requirements. A variety of English language programmes are offered at the UCL Centre for Languages & International Education.
- This degree will equip students with a strong knowledge of clinical medicine and the ability to develop scientific ideas into clinical concepts, and enhance the translation of science into medicine.
- This fusion of basic and clinical science will enable graduates to work at the highest levels in biomedical research, the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology, clinical trials, hospital management, etc.
- Students will be exposed to a variety of different disciplines in year one, with one month work experience in year three; students will be able to recognise their talents and pursue them.
- This course will generate graduates who are innovative and inventive, and who can enable scientific discoveries to make a difference in medicine. Our graduates will lead clinical science in the future.
Year one is demanding, covering the foundations of human biology and clinical medicine. The content includes most of the topics covered during first year Medicine, but is more detailed in some areas and less so in others. The six core courses lay a foundation for understanding human health and disease and each system is covered in detail. Teaching of biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology and basic anatomy is integrated within each system. There are also four optional courses of which two are selected. Students learn in small groups with problem-based learning and tutorials.
In year two, you will take two compulsory courses: the Molecular Basis of Disease, and Epidemiology and Medical Statistics. You will also choose six optional courses from a wide selection, enabling you to choose your own route within the biomedical sciences. This allows you to start selecting specific courses for a defined pathway.
Year three follows this pattern and allows you to build courses around a solid applied medical science core and into a bespoke route. Years three and four are designed to enable you to create a tailor-made programme that suits your needs and aspirations. You will develop core skills that give you strengths to pursue a career you enjoy.
Students will be expected to read and study before each teaching session; flip teaching will be used. Most teaching sessions will be small group tutorials. A co-ordinated programme-wide assessment will be used to blend formative and summative assessments into a novel and innovative approach. Dissertations will be assessed based on final-year projects.
Various assessment methods, including: examinations, some of which will be single best answer format; coursework, including essays of up to 1500 words, portfolios, and case presentations.
In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual courses, normally valued at 0.5 or 1.0 credits, adding up to a total of 4.0 credits for the year. Courses are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional courses varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 1.0 credit is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

The BSc and MSci degrees are basic science degrees that cover anatomy, cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, biochemistry, immunology and infection, neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology and pathology. However, they differ from most degrees in these areas in that in the first year there is a strong foundation in human biology and clinical medicine.
Students can forge their own pathways during years two and three, opting for courses that suit their career choices.
For example, if a student has a good idea that they wish to develop into a business, there is a course available which includes supervision, idea protection and marketing. The proposal will be subject to a real life Dragon’s Den presentation with real business representatives present who are willing to invest money.
As this is the first year of this programme, no information is currently available about career destinations. However, we expect all students to be capable of working in any of the biomedical sciences that they choose to pursue, but importantly this degree leads to many other possibilities as well.
