Leisure and Relaxation - Get Active!

In between your studies you will, of course, find time for a little recreation. UCL has a policy of keeping Wednesday afternoons free of teaching, so every student has an opportunity to engage in some sporting, cultural or voluntary activity. Further details can be found at www.uclu.org

Bloomsbury Theatre

  • Owned and run by UCL
  • Hosts professional performances – often focusing on innovative and unusual productions – including stand-up comedy, drama, dance and music
  • A professionally equipped theatre located on the main campus

Societies

UCL Students' Union runs:

  • 50 sports clubs
  • 130 societies which allow you to share your interests and enthusiasm with like-minded students...politics, culture, arts, religion, performance, international, campaigning

Music

You will find plenty of opportunities to develop your musical interests at UCL, whether through finding others who enjoy listening to the same style of music as you, or playing an instrument yourself. From DJ-ing with Rare FM (Student Radio), to performing with the Chamber Music Club or University College Opera, there is something to suit all tastes. Bookable rehearsal rooms are available on campus and in some residences.

Relaxation and socialising

Of course, as a break from all this activity, you will at some point want to chat to friends over lunch, drink coffee while reading a (student-discounted price) newspaper, or dance the evening away to celebrate meeting an essay deadline. As well as outlets on campus, cafés, bars and shops can be found in good supply around UCL.

UCL Students' Union

  • Run by elected student officers
  • Provides a focus for student activity and a voice for student views
  • Provides a Rights and Advice Centre staffed by professional advisers
  • UCL Union student officers provide important input to senior UCL committees, to shape the way UCL is run.

Sports and exercise

Taking exercise helps you maintain your physical health and wellbeing, but it can also provide an enjoyable and essential break from your studies and, in teams and classes, a chance to make friends and socialise.

At UCL we provide high-quality facilities and opportunities for everyone to get active, whether you are a competitive player of team sports, or simply interested in a yoga class to aid relaxation and suppleness.

Run by the UCL Students' Union, different venues cater for a huge number of activities, from personal fitness routines in the gym to football on outdoor pitches. You can also use the 33-metre swimming pool in the newly refurbished University of London Union building adjacent to UCL.

Offering great value, the Bloomsbury Fitness Centre, located on the main campus, was expanded in 2010 and now features over 90 exercise stations including treadmills, cycle machines, crosstrainers, fixed resistance machines, and free weights. There is a varied class timetable with Yoga, Pilates, Spinning, Aerobics, Circuit Training, and more. Qualified and friendly instructors provide a free beginner’s gym induction session and follow-up advice. The centre also includes a warming up/stretching area, two squash courts, a dance studio and martial arts Dojo. Please see our website www.uclu.org/bf for more information.

The Somers Town Community Sports Centre is just a short walk from UCL's Bloomsbury campus. A variety of indoor sports are catered for, including basketball, badminton, netball, football, volleyball, table tennis, short tennis and trampolining as well as fitness classes.

Competitive fixtures for team sports are held at UCL's outdoor pitches and courts in Shenley, Hertfordshire. With provision for rugby, football, netball, lacrosse and cricket, there is a free bus service on match days.

Fifty different sports clubs are run under the auspices of UCL Union. Of course, these include all those you might expect, such as football, tennis, hockey, athletics and nine different martial arts. There is also an array of clubs which have access to specialised facilities: rowing, horse riding, mountaineering and ice skating, for example, and yet more such as Ultimate Frisbee and Urban Sports that offer a fresh and fun outlook. Dance, from ballet to salsa and hip hop, is also on offer. Join up at Freshers' Fayre or contact the clubs via the website www.uclu.org/clubs-societies

Beyond UCL's own facilities, London offers many opportunities to participate in sports as well as a wealth of spectator events to inspire you, from the London Marathon to a choice of Premiership football games, tennis at Wimbledon, rugby at Twickenham and cricket at Lord's and the Oval.
