Study Abroad

One world, 193 countries, 6,912 languages, countless cultures. How much have you experienced? Discover the differences and similarities first hand, with a decision to include study abroad as a part of your UCL degree.

You can expect to: gain confidence and understanding through day-today life as you experience new challenges; develop language skills and cultural awareness; and expand your knowledge base through exposure to different academic environments.

Study abroad provides you with a unique and exciting opportunity, developing key life skills for the increasingly global environment in which we now live and work.

At UCL we recognise that spending a period of time studying abroad is an intrinsically valuable experience. With increasing numbers of students looking to study abroad as part of their degree, we are actively developing such opportunities. Currently you may choose from over 100 undergraduate degree programmes which include study abroad as an integral part of the curriculum. There are also many programmes which offer optional study abroad opportunities.

UCL’s exchange partners, which total in excess of 260 institutions including 47 of the world’s top 100 universities, provide you with a truly global network. The majority of UCL’s European links are supported by the Erasmus Scheme, one of the core activities of the European Commission’s new life-long learning programme. Further information about Erasmus can be found at www.britishcouncil.org/erasmus. A number of UCL study abroad partners are in English-speaking countries.

In terms of financial support, if you take part in an exchange you pay no fees to the host institution. If you are a UK/EU national and study abroad for the full year as an Erasmus student, you pay no fees that year to UCL either and are also eligible for a mobility grant. Additional financial support is available through UCL’s Access to Learning Fund and Study Abroad Bursaries scheme. For those going to Spain, Portugal and much of Latin America further support is available through the UCL/Santander Universities Study Abroad Scheme.

To help you obtain the maximum benefit from a study abroad placement we provide comprehensive support. This includes a preparation programme co-ordinated by UCL’s International Office, Peer Advisers to pass on first-hand experiences and monitoring visits to support you whilst on your placement. The UCL Language Centre provides linguistic support if you are not studying a language as part of your main degree and the UCL Careers Service can provide advice about both paid and voluntary work placements. In addition there is a network of departmental Study Abroad Tutors to provide you with academic support before, during and after your placement.
