University life is not just about graduating from a degree programme, but being able to explore the extensive opportunities for developing skills and partaking in extracurricular activities. UCL Union is run by students to enhance and complement university life beyond academic study. Every UCL student is automatically a member.

The Union runs clubs for most major sports and a significant number of the less wellknown ones. From hockey, rowing and women’s rugby to Kung Fu, water polo and skateboarding – there is something to suit every taste, and if the club or society for your special interest does not exist, then it is very easy to set up a new one. UCL sports teams consistently rank top in London and are in the top 30 nationwide. The 90-acre UCL sports ground at Shenley, Hertfordshire, has such high quality pitches that Watford football club train there. UCL Union sport clubs organise coaches to and from Shenley for both training and matches. The Union gym (Bloomsbury Fitness) and the Somers Town Sports Centre offer facilities for activities such as basketball and personal fitness programmes. The University of London Union, adjacent to UCL, and to which UCL students have access, has a full-size swimming pool.

UCL Union has over 140 clubs and societies to cater for most interests. As well as sport, there are political, cultural, religious, arts, environmental and media societies whose events are open to all. For those who want to gain valuable work-related experience and skills, the Union runs a training and personal development programme and organises numerous voluntary work opportunities in the local community.

For students wanting to socialise and relax, UCL Union runs a number of bars and cafés around campus, and hosts regular events and entertainments from the summer ball to highlighting culture week.

The Union has access to UCL’s own West End theatre, the UCL Bloomsbury, where at least ten weeks each year are dedicated to student productions. Although drama, music and dance are not formally taught at UCL, this does not prevent UCL Union drama and music societies from staging outstanding performances, with UCL Union Drama making it to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in recent years.

You will be spoilt for choice as UCL Union offers so many activities for students to participate in, from debating, photography or jazz, to journalism on the student magazine, radio or TV station – almost anything you care to think of is available at UCL Union!
