Future Admission Requirements

Changes to the 14-19 Curriculum

UCL has been reviewing its admission requirements to take account of the changes to the UK 14-19 curriculum, being taught from September 2008. An outline of our policies regarding these qualification changes is set out below.

Advanced Diplomas

UCL recognises the potential of the Diplomas both to broaden educational opportunities for young people and encourage the development of a range of skills.  As such, UCL is pleased to consider students studying an Advanced Diploma qualification which includes two A-Levels in the additional/specialist learning component.

The minimum requirement will be the Advanced Diploma awarded with an overall minimum grade of B, plus 2 GCE A-Levels awarded at a minimum of grade B achieved in the additional/specialist learning component.

Please be aware that many departmental entry requirements will be higher than that indicated here and some departments will require specific A-level subjects to be taken. In addition, it is likely that there will be some departments for which the Advanced Diploma will not meet their entrance requirements. Advice should be sought from the relevant departmental admissions tutor.

Extended Project

UCL welcomes the introduction of the Extended Project into the curriculum recognising that it will develop many of the skills necessary for successful study at university.

For students presenting A-levels, UCL will be accepting a pass in the Extended Project as an alternative to the need to offer a pass in a fourth subject at AS level.

A* Grade at A-Level

From 2010 entry, a small numbers of UCL departments are expected to require one A* grade in their entry requirements. Only departments whose entry criteria is currently set at AAA (plus a pass in a fourth AS level) will have scope to increase their requirements to include one A* grade within the three counting A-level subjects. Confirmation of the departments which will be including an A* in their offer requirements, will be published in our undergraduate prospectus early in 2009.

GCSE Modern Language

In addition to the above changes, from 2012 UCL will be amending its current GCSE requirements. In addition to requiring passes in English Language and Mathematics at grade C or higher, UCL will also require a GCSE Modern Language at grade C or above for all of its programmes. For students that will not have had an opportunity to study a GCSE Modern Language, UCL will provide opportunities to meet the language requirement once enrolled at UCL. This will be either through taking a 0.5 course unit in a language as part of the degree programme or through studying for a specially designed certificate.
