Entry requirements

Study in the heart of London

Entry requirements

You will have completed one year of undergraduate study at the time of joining the UCL Summer School and normally be able to demonstrate an average grade, or equivalent academic experience, of:

  • 3.3/4.0 GPA (US scale)
  • 2:1 (UK scale)

English language requirement

If English is not your first language, you will need to demonstrate proficiency by providing us with a recognised qualification (please see the English language requirements page for a full list):

  • The majority of modules normally require a level of IELTS 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.5 in each subskill) or equivalent
  • The following modules require a level of IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each subskill) or equivalent: Climate and Energy; Evolution and Sexual Selection; and Anatomy and Developmental Biology
  • The following module requires a level of IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each subskill) or equivalent: English Language Skills for Academic Purposes. This module also allows student to progress to other modules in Session Two (Climate and Energy; Evolution and Sexual Selection; or Anatomy and Developmental Biology only).

English Language Skills for Academic Purposes

Students with an IELTS score of 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each subskill) or equivalent may take any module in Session Two on completion of the English Language Skills for Academic Purposes module in Session One (both modules must be selected at the time of application).

Students with an IELTS score of 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each subskill) or equivalent may take the following modules in Session Two on completion of the English Language Skills for Academic Purposes module in Session One (both modules must be selected at the time of application): Climate and Energy; Evolution and Sexual Selection; and Anatomy and Developmental Biology.

English language requirements

For most modules, we require non-native speakers of English to meet the following level of proficiency:

IELTS 7.0 or above (minimum 6.5 in each component)
TOEFL (Internet based) 100 or above (minimum 24/30 in reading and writing, 20/30 in listening and speaking)
Pearson Test of English (Academic)  69 or above (minimum 62 in each component)
CAE or CPE 185 or above (minimum 176 in each component)

For Astronomy & Cosmology; Computational Systems Biology; Quantitative Finance: Maths in Investment Banking; Statistics with R and RStudio; Climate and Energy; Anatomy and Developmental Biology; Science, Method & Rationality; Statistical Thinking & Data Analysis; and Data Science and Big Data Analytics we require non-native speakers of English to meet the following level of proficiency:

IELTS 6.5 or above (minimum 6.0 in each component)
TOEFL (Internet based) 92 or above (minimum 24/30 in reading and writing, 20/30 in listening and speaking)
Pearson Test of English (Academic)  62 or above (minimum 59 in each component)
CAE or CPE 176 or above (minimum 169 in each component)

English Language Skills for Academic Purposes

For English Language Skills for Academic Purposes we require non-native speakers of English to meet the following level of proficiency:

IELTS
6.0 or above (minimum 5.5 in each component)
TOEFL (Internet based)
79 or above (minimum 20/30 in speaking, 18/30 in reading, 17/30 in listening and writing)
Pearson Test of English (Academic)
55 or above (minimum 51 in each component)
CAE or CPE 169 or above (minimum 162  in each component)

Completion of the English Language Skills for Academic Purposes module in Session One will enable you to progress to modules running in Session Two. Please see Entry Requirements for more details.
